Employment and Career Services Committee
Teleconference

23 July 2004--1:00 p.m.

 Attendees:

Jean Eason (Chair), Nigel Bristow, Tom Chmielewski,  Ken Doniger, Charles Elliott, Don Herres, Peggy Hutcheson, David Macchiarolo, Lee Stogner and Scott Grayson (staff)

Absent: Tarek Lahdhiri

  1. Action Item Status Reports:
    1. CamPlan: Nigel emailed the committee the final draft of the CamPlan.  Nigel reported that he had received comments from most committee members and had incorporated the suggestions into the document.  The committee approved moving forward with publishing the document on the website.

                                                              i.      Scott will have the document proofread by staff [should be completed by 9 August 2004]

ii.      Once proofed, Scott will post to the web--linked from the CareerNavigator page as well as an announcement and link from the virtual community.

iii.      Peggy will supply Scott with a resource bibliography to include in CAMPlan.

    1. Articles: Ken Doniger reported that he had submitted an article about QRT’s in June but it was not in article form as of yet.  He asked that the committee provide him with some input as to how to improve the draft.  [Draft Article]

    2. Region Employment and Career Websites:  Scott offered to look into developing a template for Regions to use in order to develop and/or enhance their employment and career websites.  He will check with IEEE-USA IT/Web staff to see what can be done.  Scott provided the committee with a target date of 6 November 2004.  The committee stated that it was willing to wait.  Committee members like the IEEE Region 3 format but it takes a lot of work to keep it up to date.

    3. Monitor IEEE Jobs Web Site:  It was brought to the attention of the Committee that an IEEE member and member of the Santa Clara Section has written an analysis of the current IEEE Job Site.  His contention is that it appears to be focused on generating revenue rather than truly serving as a service to IEEE members.

  1. GSPX Seminar:  Jean Eason reported that Nigel Bristow, Jean Eason and Tarek Lahdhiri will provide a workshop on professional development in conjunction with the GSPX Conference on September 28th in Santa Clara, CA

  2. Next Meeting:  The committee decided to hold its next meeting on Saturday, 6 November 2004.  Don Herres will explore the possibility of IEEE’s Rochester, NY Section involvement.  If Rochester is receptive to the idea of hosting the ECS Committee the format would be as follows:  Friday afternoon (12 p.m. - 5 p.m.): ECS Committee would hold a workshop dealing with employment and career skills.  On Saturday, 6 November, the committee would hold its regular committee meeting.  If the committee learns that Rochester is not an option, the committee has selected Atlanta as an alternative meeting site.  Don Herres will contact Scott Grayson with details within a week of this meeting.

  3. Adjournment:  The teleconference adjourned at 2:10 p.m. EDT
