25 April 2002 The Honorable George Bush Dear Mr. President: I am writing on behalf of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers - United States of America (IEEE-USA) to express our strong support of Dr. Denice D. Denton, Dean of the College of Engineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering at University of Washington, for appointment to the National Science Board to fill a vacancy that occurs on May 11, 2002. A Senior Member of IEEE, Dr. Denton is dean of engineering at a major U.S. research university. Before moving to the University of Washington, Dr. Denton was a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1987 to 1996. She received the B.S., M.S. (1982), and Ph.D. (1987) in Electrical Engineering from M.I.T. In addition to her strong technical background and university leadership experience, Dr. Denton is highly regarded as a teacher and has established herself as a leader in the field of engineering education reform. She chaired the National Research Council's Board on Engineering Education (1996-1999), was a member of the NAS/NRC Committee on Undergraduate Science Education (1993-1997) and served on the National Academy of Engineering's Committee on Engineering Education (1999-2001). She also served as co-director of the NSF-sponsored National Institute for Science Education at the University of Wisconsin (1995-1996). Her emphasis on teaching has earned her numerous awards including IEEE's Harriet B. Rigas Award for teaching (1995). Her efforts include an emphasis on K-12 science education and encouraging women and underrepresented minorities to pursue careers in science and engineering. Because of her accomplishments as dean of a major research university, as a leader in engineering education reform, and as an accomplished teacher, we believe Dean Denice Denton can make significant contributions to the work of the National Science Board in providing guidance to the National Science Foundation. We strongly endorse her nomination and thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, LeEarl A. Bryant, P.E. Cc: Dr. John Marburger, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy, EOP
