“Addressing Healthcare Needs of Aging Population with Technology”:
IEEE-USA, Mitretek Systems, Intel
Sponsor One-Day Symposium |
|
WHAT: |
Addressing the
Healthcare Needs of Our Aging Population with Technology is a
one-day symposium designed to focus on the role of computer,
communication and other electronic technologies to improve the quality
and cost-efficiency of geriatric care. Spearheaded by IEEE-USA’s Medical
Technology Policy Committee and its Geriatric Working Group, four
sessions will be held to identify: needs, problems; technologies; public
policy, regulatory and legislative issues, barriers and inhibitors; and
perspectives, next steps. The symposium findings and recommendations
will be compiled in a report for legislators, policy experts and
regulators — aimed at supporting a unified national home health care
agenda. An overview of the symposium can be found at
www.ieeeusa.org/conferences/geriatrictech/index.html. |

WHY
ATTEND: |
Arrival of the baby-boom generation has created an unparalleled urgency
for understanding and expanding of our national geriatric medical
service offerings. Within the next decade, according to the 2000 U.S.
Census, our 60-plus population is expected to more than quadruple, and
will place additional pressure on healthcare providers. Utilization of
healthcare services and their associated costs will not only increase as
healthcare inflation outpaces overall inflation. Utilization will also
disproportionately increase as seniors take advantage of an expanding
array of new technologies for managing chronic illness and promoting
active lifestyles. |
