IEEE-USA Broadband Deployment Workshop
Draws International Interest

WASHINGTON (24 June 2002) — Expediting broadband developments was the focus at the U.S. National Policy for Accelerating Broadband Deployment workshop in Washington, D.C., 17-18 June. The IEEE-USA Committee on Communications & Information Policy (CCP) and the Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management sponsored the workshop, which drew conferees from all over North America and media from as far away as Paris.

Bill St. Arnaud, director of network projects for CANARIE Inc. — Canada's advanced Internet development organization — delivered the keynote address on the evolution of Gigabit Ethernet over Fiber (GEF) in Canada. Other speakers included CCP Chair Alan McAdams, John Cioffi of Stanford University and Jonathan Thatcher of the IEEE Standards Association. Thatcher chairs the IEEE Standard 802.3ae task force, which recently approved extending the speed of Ethernet operations by an order of magnitude of 10 Gbit/s.

The exchange of ideas created policy issues that IEEE-USA will use to establish policies on broadband deployment. A formal position statement is expected within the year.

IEEE-USA is an organizational unit of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers created in 1973 to promote the careers and public-policy interests of the more than 235,000 electrical, electronics, computer and software engineers who are U.S. members of the IEEE. The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. For more information, go to http://www.ieeeusa.org.
