PUBLIC
AWARENESS/UNDERSTANDING
OF ENGINEERS AND TECHNOLOGY
Through a
variety of programs and activities, IEEE-USA works to
increase public awareness and appreciation of the
engineering profession and improve public understanding of
technology. Specific initiatives that need current
development support include:
-
Mass-Media Fellowships – To help increase public
understanding of engineering and technology, IEEE-USA
sponsors one or more senior, graduate or post-graduate
student members each year in the AAAS Mass Media
Fellowship program. During the 10 week summer program,
Fellows work as reporters, editors, researchers and
production assistants at such media outlets as the
Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, National Public
Radio, Sacramento Bee, and Scientific American. Fellows
learn the importance of translating their work for the
public, and leave with the tools and the know-how to
accomplish this important goal. Each Fellowship costs
$8,500.
IEEE-USA accepts restricted gifts to the IEEE-USA Fund
for support of this program. For more information, see:

“Discoveries and Breakthroughs” -- In
collaboration with the American Institute of Physics,
IEEE-USA helps shape television news spots about
engineering and science, including IEEE technologies,
for syndication to the top 66 U.S. TV markets. Each
month AIP’s “Discoveries and Breakthroughs” delivers
twelve 90-second broadcasts in English (and up to three
in Spanish) to subscribing stations, and has a potential
reach of more than 75-million viewers. The program
includes an online component for viewers to delve more
deeply into the engineering and science topics. In
addition to contributing information on IEEE
technologies, IEEE-USA is collaborating with AIP on
adapting the TV news spots for use in the classroom by
pre-university students and teachers. IEEE-USA accepts

National
Engineers Week “Discover Engineering” Family Day
– “Discover Engineering Family Day” at the National
Building Museum in the nation’s capital is an
interactive day-long program designed to introduce young
students and their families to the wonders and joys of
engineering. The program engages more than 6,000
participants annually, mostly elementary and
middle-school students (including many girls and
minorities), in “hands-on” and “minds-on” experiences to
demonstrate and create interest in engineering
principles encountered in everyday life. 2008 marks the
15th year of the EWeek “Family Day,” arguably the
premier engineering and science outreach program in the
Washington, DC area. The event serves a model for
similar family programs throughout the United States.

PROFESSIONAL
EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
IEEE-USA supports three educational programs targeted at engineering
students and working engineers, which are designed to help prepare
them for the non-technical aspects of a successful engineering
career.
-
Student
Professional Awareness Conferences – Each year, IEEE-USA
supports 25-40 student professional awareness conferences
organized by IEEE Student Branches across the U.S. Students
organize the conferences, gaining valuable management and
teamwork experience and developing self-confidence. The
conferences introduce student members to the non-technical
aspects of successful engineering careers and to issues
confronting the profession. IEEE-USA funds speaker travel and
limited program expenses. With additional funding, IEEE-USA
would be able to expand this program, reaching more students and
enhancing their professional awareness. IEEE-USA would accept

Washington Internships for Students of Engineering – Through
this multi-society program, IEEE sponsors three or more U.S. student
members to spend 10 weeks in Washington during the summer learning
how government officials make decisions on complex technological
issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and
regulatory public policy decisions. Many WISE Interns pursue that
knowledge and interest in their career paths and are actively
recruited as future leaders by the participating engineering
societies. The WISE Program is ranked as one of the 100 best
Internship opportunities in the U.S. by the Princeton Review.
Each Internship costs $7.5K. IEEE-USA accepts restricted gifts to
the IEEE-USA Fund for support of this

GOVERNMENT FELLOWSHIPS
IEEE-USA currently supports two Government Fellowship programs that
serve the dual purpose of providing unique educational opportunities for
qualified IEEE U.S. members while enhancing the technical content of
U.S. public policy:
-
IEEE-USA Congressional Fellowships – Each year, IEEE-USA
sponsors two or more members as Congressional Fellows to spend a
year working on the staff of a Member of Congress or congressional
committee. In addition to learning about the legislative process
first hand, Fellows often find themselves in key positions to
provide critical insights into the technology implications of
important public policy issues. In addition, Fellows perform a
valuable service to the profession by sharing their knowledge and
experience with other engineers, and serving in volunteer roles that
enhance the profession’s input to the public policy process. Each
Fellowship costs approximately $75K. IEEE-USA accepts gifts to its
IEEE-USA Government Fellows Fund, administered through the IEEE-USA
Foundation, for support of this program. For more information, see:

PRECOLLEGE EDUCATION INITIATIVES
Through its
Precollege Education Committee, IEEE-USA supports a number of initiatives and
programs targeted at increasing technical literacy through improvements in K-12
math, science and engineering education. Specific initiatives that need current
development support include:
-
Teacher
Grant Program – Since funding for extracurricular science and
technological educational programs are normally scarce and difficult for
teachers to access, IEEE-USA has created a grant program that would help
fund K-12 teachers who are interested in implementing innovative science and
technology programs within or outside the standard classroom curriculum.
This program is designed to recognize and fund highly innovative science and
technology programs, and specialized projects. Each project would be funded
up to $1,500.
Educators who seek
personal improvement of technical instruction to students may apply for an
IEEE K-12 Teacher Grant. Applicants must show projects that are designed to
deliver higher order thinking, science and technology skill-building
experiences for students. Projects may occur within or outside of a
classroom setting. Educators will be required to utilize an IEEE-USA
volunteer assistance in the development and implementation of their
innovative programs. Program Administrators within IEEE-USA will assist
teachers who request assistance, in identifying local IEEE chapter members
for their IEEE K-12 Teacher Grant Program projects. Currently the IEEE
Foundation has approved $4,250 in pilot funding for 2006 and 2007. With
additional funding, IEEE-USA would be able to expand this program, reaching
more teachers and students and enhancing their technical literacy. For more
information, see:

Future City
Competition (Engineers Week) “Best Communications” Award and Essay Competition
– Through the Future City Competition, which IEEE-USA helped to launch during
EWeek in 1993, youngsters learn about the engineering creative process using a
computer program to design model cities. Since 2003, IEEE-USA has sponsored an
award for the best use of communications in an EWeek Future City Competition
project. We have been invited to sponsor the essay portion of the competition in
2007-08, at a cost of $7,000. The essay portion of the competition helps
students express their ideas in writing and complements their visual expression
through the Future City display. For more information, go to

CAREER-RELATED MEMBER SERVICES
Through its
CareerNavigator, IEEE-USA provides a full array of career and employment-related
services as a benefit to IEEE members. Two particular services that could be
enhanced and expanded with additional development monies are:
-
International Salary Service – Salary Surveys give technical
professionals a tool to gauge their market value in their local economies --
an important service to the profession IEEE-USA currently administered an
on-line salary survey and database for U.S. members, with participants
receiving access to compensation information, and companies paying for
access to the database. IEEE-USA would like to expand this capability to
internationalize the Salary Service for the benefit of non-U.S. members
building on the infrastructure we have already developed. This requires
funding to further develop our software infrastructure. IEEE-USA would
accept restricted gifts to the IEEE-USA Fund for
support of this initiative. POC: Chris Currie, 202-530-8355,
c.currie@ieee.org
-
Consultants
Database – IEEE-USA developed and maintains a subscription-based database
used by IEEE members who are consultants to advertise their services to
potential customers and to network with other consultants. We are currently
developing plans to rebuild the database infrastructure to provide the ultimate
meeting place for IEEE member consultants and clients who can use their services
-- part of IEEE's mission of networking the world. IEEE-USA would accept
restricted gifts to the IEEE-USA Fund for support of
this initiative. For more information, see:
